I understand the price has recently dropped, increasing it value further.GarageGames, a popular independent game developer has announced today, that Marble Blast Ultra on Xbox 360 Live Arcade is now available. It continues to be my standard by which I measure other XBLA games. It was well worth the 800 MS points I paid for. On a personal note, Ultra Marble Blast was my first Xbox Live Arcade game.
I'm no Einstein, but the physics seem spot on to my untrained eye. The graphics are beautiful, particularly for a Xbox live arcade game. Armed with the Mega Marble power-up you can bounce your opponents clear of the board with a mere touch from your temporarily oversized sphere. Size matters in Ultra Marble Blast, at least in some situations. While the power-ups are necessary on some single player levels, they are extremely useful in multiplayer. The game play is a mix between racing to the next gem that spawns and blasting your opponents out of the way. The goal is to collect more gems than your opponents during the allotted time. In multiplayer mode, your ambulatory marble is placed on one of several more or less square or rectangular shaped platforms, again color coded for the difficulty to get around. The multiplayer aspect of the game is really fun, especially as quick diversion from a more substantial game. On some of the highest difficulty levels, they can be almost insurmountable. Although there are no "shooter" marbles trying to knock you off, there are number of often challenging obstacles built into the landscape. Some level require that you pick up gems along the way. (Green=Easy Blue=Medium, Yellow=Hard) While rolling about, you can pick up various power-ups that allow you to jump higher, roll like a rocket, and increase in size for example. The mazes are broken down into three color coded difficulty levels. Each maze has a par time that you need to beat to get some achievements.
For those of you that grew up in an arcade in the 80's like me, think of Marble Ultra Blast as a modern day 3-D version of Marble Madness.ĭuring the single player portion of the game you navigate the marble through mazes, which seem to be floating in the stratosphere.
